Other day I opened my WhatsApp and noticed my 6 years old daughter had a chat with Meta AI. Interestingly the interaction was so real, I am sure my daughter believed she was talking to real person. More the world is becoming reliant on AI, more we feel insecure. We have so many questions including:
- How AI will shape future lives?
- How it will impact our social behaviours?
- Will it cost our jobs?
- Is AI existential threat to mankind?
- If AI will replace most jobs in next one decade, what we all are going to do?
There are hundreds of more questions need answers. However believing in the adaptability according to advancements in present day is need of hour. Artificial intelligence (AI) has the significant potential to impact future lives positively and negatively.
Positive impacts:
- Healthcare: The dominant field where AI can help is HealthCare, with sophistically trained AI models to diagnose diseases more accurately and promptly, heading towards better treatments recommendations.
- Increased efficiency: AI is believed to assist in automating repetitive tasks reducing workloads, doing assignments or jobs efficiently in less time. However the creative, critical thinking work and strategic work will still be done through human brains, the time saved from not doing mundane tasks we can do all strategic work.
- Enhanced education: AI-powered adaptive learning models can not only dramatically adjust educational content for individual requirements effectively but by providing appropriate content where AI models analyze through algorithms, recommend suitable directions for studies. Moreover interactive learning with targeted feedbacks and support available all the time makes it easier for students and educators manifold.
- Workplace Efficacy : Where AI has all potential to improve workplace and has paved ways for helping reducing workload, saving time and dependency on finances it also can help in optimizing the quality of product and services within available resources.
Negative impacts:
- Job Displacement: The biggest threat AI-powered automation could lead to; is job losses on huge levels. In coming few years all those sectors where jobs are repetitive or can be easily automated, AI is expected to replace.
- Bias and discrimination: Eventually AI systems and models are trained by people and huge possibility of flaws still remain there because these models can extend and intensify existing biases. Hence unfair outcomes can be expected due to objectively trained data models.
- Privacy Issues: Where data is considered king, AI-powered monitoring and data collection can destroy personal privacy and increase the risk of negative use of data if goes into wrong hands.
- Technological Dependency: Technology has vulnerabilities and complete or over dependency on AI could lead to technological failures. Decreased Critical thinking and reliance on technology is seemingly directly proportional to each other.
However using and developing AI responsibly can mitigate the negative impacts and maximize the positive effects. Ultimate goal of every technological development is to make society a better place for individuals with possible constructive outcomes. Artificial Intelligence has all the powers to help humans grow if use properly.
