The persistent violation of workers’ rights in our beloved country, Pakistan has become so common that it needs urgent attention. As a nation founded on the principles of justice and compassion, it is imperative that we address the plight of domestic and manual labourers who often find themselves marginalized and exploited.
Islamic teachings provide clear guidance on the rights of workers emphasizing principles of fairness, dignity, and compassion. The Quran and Hadiths underscore the importance of treating workers with respect and ensuring their well-being. Yet, regrettably, the reality for many workers in Pakistan do not align with these noble teachings.
Domestic workers, who play and indispensable role in the functioning of countless households, are often subjected to deplorable working conditions and meagre wages. Many endure long hours of labour without adequate rests or breaks, while others face rebel, physical abuse at the hands of thin employees. Manual labourers, toiling in construction sites, factories, and fields, similarly face hardships ranging from rather unsafe working environments to unfair compensation, receiving less money than their supposed to get from their employee. As conscious citizens, it is our moral obligation to address these injustices and advocate for meaningful change. Here are several recommendations to improve the situation of workers in Pakistan, considering ng both Islamic principles and practically:
- Strict enforcement of labour laws must be prioritized by the government to ensure that all workers, including domestic and manual labourers are afforded their rights to fair wages, safe working conditions and ”human” treatment.
- Comprehensive legislation should be ended to specifically address, the various challenges and or obstacles faced by domestic workers.
- Education and awareness initiatives should be launched to inform both employees and workers about their rights and allegation under Islamic teachings and labour laws.
- Worker unions and advocacy groups should be empowered and supported to represent the interests of workers effectively. These organizations can serve as initials voices for workers rights.
- The government should establish robust self ware programs aimed at providing essential support services to vulnerable workers, including access to healthcare, education etc.
In conclusion, the issue of workers rights in Pakistan demands urgent attention and concerted action from all stake holders thus it is important to to raise awareness about this critical issue and to advocate for meaningful reforms that uphold the rights of workers in Pakistan. After all the Holy Prophet said that,
‘‘Muslims have been told to give wages of the labourer before hid sweat dries out”
